Day 12: Sat 7 May - Mitchell to Charleville

Day 12: Sat 7 May - Mitchell to Charleville

9 – 19°,  Partly cloudy all day with fresh southeasterly winds making it feel much cooler.
Towed 180km

We were packed, hooked up and on our way by 8am today. The Warrego highway to Charleville was a little bumpy in places, but overall one of the better roads we've driven on this trip, and being a Saturday, there was very little traffic. It was a very pleasant drive and the countryside looked incredibly green for this time of year, indicating just how much rain has fallen in the south west QLD region. Unfortunately, there is more rain to come which will more than likely impact our travel plans.

First stop was just 40km into the day's drive at the Warrego Wildlife Refuge in Mungallala, one of the few outback based wildlife rescue and rehabilitation sites in QLD. With almost no notice, we arrived at the refuge site and witnessed the incredible passion and commitment of one of a couple who rescue and care for sick, injured and orphaned kangaroos and wallabies. It was amazing experience. We then continued along the Warrego Hwy stopping in Morven for our morning coffee, having to shelter from the very cool breeze. We had a quick look around, and there were a few interesting sites, but none more interesting than the Kerosene tin hut from the Great Depression of the 1930s. These huts built by flattened kerosene tins were common amongst pensioners during this time as the only accomodation available.  With a population of almost 200, Morven would have been a worthy overnight stay.  However, we continued on to Charleville, checking in at the Cobb & Co Caravan Park for 3 nights. In a bushland like setting close to town, the park has spacious shady grassed areas (with lots of bindis) and seems quiet and peaceful. After setting up, we jumped on our bikes for a quick ride into town, then returned for a quiet afternoon relaxing and planning our activities for the next few days.

...Sorry lots of photos today - hard to choose.
