Day 46: Fri 10 Jun - Ingham
5 – 23°. That was a fresh start to the day with quite a heavy dew. A lovely clear sky and a very light breeze from later in the morning, turning into another glorious day. Greg and I walked a whole 50m from our caravans to the entrance of the TYTO Wetlands for an early walk through the wetlands. The name TYTO is derived from the scientific name Tyto Longimembris - Eastern Grass Owl, one of the local birdlife inhabitants. We saw plenty of cute wallabies, not too much birdlife and definitely no Owls. We did see a sign warning of the recent sighting of a crocodile within the past 7 days. I thought the sign said it was a 5m crocodile, but Greg pointed out that 5m is how far away we should stay from the waters edge. Thankfully we didn't see crocodiles either. Just 800m from town, the TYTO Wetlands is one of Australia's largest urban wetland rehabilitation projects covering 120 hectares with more than 240 species of bird, an abundance of wallabies and many plant species. With several walking tracks, bird hides and viewing platforms it's a great place to visit, and great credit to the local shire. After breakfast and a bit of admin, we walked into town where we all met for coffee at JK Deli, a lovely cafe, that served good coffee and good food. Afterwards, we had bit of a wander around town, visited the mini military museum in the library and returned to the van for a quiet afternoon. Greg and I went out for a short bike ride around town at about 3:00pm, and on return walked back out into the wetlands to catch the setting sun. It was nice, but not quite what we had hoped for, so we returned to the van where we had dinner together outside - all rugged up. The Red Emporer that Greg and I had was superb, and worth the expense (the ladies had steak and chops). Ingham is another great little town, and definitely worth a visit. We would gladly come back, as there is so much more to see than what we had time for. Tomorrow, we leave for Innisfail.
