Day 48: Sun 12 Jun - Innisfail
14 – 24°. It was a much milder night, with the day starting out sunny with not even the slightest breeze, becoming cloudy and windy for a few hours in the mid afternoon. This morning's walk was along a section of the South Johnstone River which runs behind the Caravan Park, then into and round the nearby streets of East Innisfail. After breakfast Noeleene and I drove into town for coffee overlooking the Johnstone river - it was a beautiful morning which warmed up quickly. Noeleene then went off for a bit shopping, while I wandered around town checking out the beautiful Art Deco buildings that Innisfail has become known for. Innisfail was flattened by a cyclone in 1918 and was rebuilt in Art Deco style which became popularised after WW1. The town was severely damaged again by Cyclone Larry in 2006, and renovations and rebuilding continued in Art Deco style. With more than 55 commercial buildings built in Art Deco style, Innisfail has one of the largest concentrations of such buildings in Australia. It's a lovely clean and tidy town, and highly I recommend a visit. It is also much larger than we expected and has a good range of services. Turning my attention to buying a 2 burner gas stove to attach to the caravan LPG setup via bayonet was not straight forward though - (different connections and no adapters), so we gave up and decided that our Weber Baby Q and single burner butane cooker will do us when camping off grid. We also still have our electric options when connected to power, but hopefully Swift find a solution to the safety concerns quickly. Back at the van we had lunch and an afternoon nap, before Greg and I headed out for another ride along the river, through town and back again. After carrying out a few routine safety checks on the ute and the van, we sat down for our sunset drinks, followed by a very tasty baked chicken breast and vegetables cooked in the Air Fryer - we were very satisfied with the result. Tomorrow, we leave for the short drive to Yungaburra in the tablelands for a 5-night stay, and we're looking forward to our first visit back to the tablelands in more than 36 years.
A lot of photos today - I think I found every Art Deco building in Innisfail.
