Day 51: Wed 15 Jun - Yungaburra

Day 51: Wed 15 Jun - Yungaburra

16 – 23°. A much milder night and mostly cloudy day with light winds.  We had a bit of a sleep-in today - until about 7:00am, no morning walk. At about 9:00am Noeleene, Greg and I drove into Cairns down the main access road from the Tablelands via the Gillies Range Road. Wow...how many bends are there? Well google tells me 263 in 19 km of the total 62km drive. We were planning to drive back down to Cairns on Friday to do the train ride up to Kuranda and return by Skyrail, but no way am I driving back down this road again. Arriving at Cairns, we stopped at Earlville for Greg to collect some spectacles he had ordered. We then we drove a short distance further to Tentworld to buy a low pressure gas burner for the caravan, due to not being able to use our Swift Gas Stove because of the safety recall. Nil Stock - apparently no one in Cairns has any stock due to the national recall of swift ovens - which the majority of vans have. We decided we will just make do with our Weber and butane cooker when not connected to power, and Greg & Wendy have a compatible gas burner that we can borrow when off-grid when needed, as they are not affected by a recall. From there, we continued to the Esplanade in Cairns where it was sunny with a clear blue sky, about 10deg warmer and much more humid than on the Tablelands. After a quick takeaway bite to eat in the park, we all went our separate ways. I went for wander around town and along the boardwalk before meeting Noeleene and Greg outside the RSL at 1:30 to return to Yungaburra - up the Gillies Range Road again. Back at the van, we had a quiet afternoon before venturing into town for dinner with Greg and Wendy,  Dave and Noy and Martin and Heather at the Yungaburra Pub. The meals were tasty and plentiful and we had a nice evening in a wonderful old timber hotel. Returning to the caravan Park, I ended the day with a stroll down the beautifully lit Avenue of Honour opposite our caravan park.
