Day 56: Mon 20 Jun - Chillagoe to Port Douglas

Day 56: Mon 20 Jun - Chillagoe to Port Douglas

Towed 227km of 5745km total (4859km towing)

16 – 27° in Chillagoe, 19 - 24 in Port Douglas. Another magnificent morning in Chillagoe, becoming cloudy with light drizzle as we approached the coast. Chillagoe is only a small country town, but a very interesting place with a lot of history - I hope to return again some time for a longer stay. It was an early morning walk around Chillagoe with Greg before we packed up and set off to Port Douglas for a couple of nights. We were on the way a little after 8:00am. Our morning coffee stop was on the north side of Mareeba at Biboohra. With only 79km to go, we made our way down the steep and windy Mt Molloy Road in good time with little traffic, reaching our destination at the Big 4 Port Douglas Glengarry Holiday Park just after midday. The caravan park is situated 9km out of Port Douglas on the side of a hill, but our site is at the lower level on a wide open grassy area with lots of shade from surrounding palms - very tropical. After we set up and had lunch, Noeleene and I drove into Port Douglas for a look around - Noeleene turned right and headed up the street to the shops, while I turned left to a few historical sites and the jetty, then down to the beach and along a nice but hilly path around the headland. 1.5hours later we both had enough, returning to the van for pre-dinner drinks with Greg and Wendy then dinner and an early night.
