Day 75: Sat 9 Jul - Karumba

Day 75: Sat 9 Jul - Karumba

14 (felt like 9) to 27 Deg. No wind - a beautiful and not quite so fresh morning. The wind picked up a little by mid morning, but dropped off again in the afternoon. Another clear sunny day, with not a cloud to be seen.

I went for a long morning walk before breakfast then returned and refilled the water tanks for next 4 days of free camping. I went for a bike ride into the town centre with Greg and Wendy along the main road and back via a trail along the river. Meanwhile Noel stayed behind to finish her washing and to have a bit of 'me' time. On return, Noel and I drove back into town to refuel, not because we had to; (we've only driven 320km), but because the price of fuel at $2.499/lt is the cheapest we will come across for the next 10 days. We have driven a total of 7,370 km at an average of 15lt/100km, of which 6,134km has been towing.  I couldn't catch a Barra, so I also called into a local fishermen's shopfront and bought a nice frozen fillet of Barra to take away with us. Back at the van we had lunch and a LLD, then I started packing up in preparation for our departure tomorrow morning. While packing up, our caravanning neighbour came over for a chat. He's from near Ballarat and spends about 10 weeks a year here fishing. He complained that this is the worst year for fishing he has experienced (normal for me - nothing). He also told me about the amount of Barra that the professional fisherman are netting, and I was astounded that they net more than 100 in a single catch, and that they don't appear to have a quota. We all walked down to the Sunset Tavern for dinner a little after 5:15pm. We had a prime position in the beer garden overlooking the beach and sunset, and it was the nicest sunset since we've seen here. All our meals were very nice, washed down with various types of beverages. It was a lovely evening, capping off an enjoyable and relaxing stay at Karumba.
