Day 76: Sun 10 Jul - Karumba to Mittigudi Creek

Day 76: Sun 10 Jul - Karumba to Mittigudi Creek (via Burke & Wills Roadhouse)

Towed 346km

12 to 24 Deg. Windy all day, but clear and sunny.
We drove away from Karumba at 08:30am, heading south along the Matilda Way, a fantastic road, into a strong headwind for 268km to Four Ways (the Burke & Wills Roadhouse). We stopped at a roadside rest area on the way for mornos at about 10:00am, then continued to the Burke & Wills Roadhouse where we arrived a little after 12:00pm. We refuelled ($2.77/lt) then had a quick wander around, but it didn’t take long as there isn’t anything to see here. Inside the Roadhouse, Wendy, Noel and I were seduced by the smell of burgers and chips, so we placed our orders and were quickly in back in our vans devouring our lunch. We had originally thought we might stop here overnight, but after lunch with plenty of daylight remaining, good roads and feeling up to it, we continued another 80km towards Lawn Hill along the Wills Development Road stopping at a  free camp at Mittigudi Creek. It’s a small and remote level area just off the main road after Mittigudi Creek.  After parking our vans,  Greg, Wendy and I set off for a short walk down to and along the dry creek bed, while Noel built a batch of scones for tomorrow’s mornos.  After returning, Wendy sent her drone up in the air for a few aerial photos, then at 5:30pm we congregated at our van for very peaceful sunset and pre-dinner drink. It was another special sunset with the only sound being an occasional vehicle passing by. Dinner was a spur of the moment creation of sweet chilli, ginger and lime chicken fried rice and vegetables, with another stunning blood orange sky this evening as backdrop. After dinner we went outside again for a bit of star gazing in the fresh air, but the moon was quite bright, so it wasn’t a very productive night for spotting satellites for shooting stars. We were the only two vans parked here and with no internet or phone service, or TV reception, it was a wonderfully quiet night.
