Day 94: Thu 28 Jul - Longreach to Muttaburra

Day 94: Thu 28 Jul - Longreach to Muttaburra

5 (Felt like 0) to 22 deg.  Another very cold morning and another outing for the beanie and gloves on my morning walk. It was another sunny cloudless day, but the breeze was cold. The wind picked up in the afternoon, then settled again by evening. It is going to be another cold night though. My morning walk was back to the QANTAS Museum for the sunrise, before returning to pack up and driving away at 8:30am from Longreach along a back road to Muttaburra - an easy 125km away. It was narrow single lane sealed road for all but 5km of roadworks, but there wasn't much traffic, and the road was very good. We arrived in Muttaburra at the Freedom Camp next to the town's dam by 1030 - just in time for our daily coffee and cake which we enjoyed outside our van in the sun by the dam. After we set up, Noel and I walked to the Post Office / Information Centre, then had a wander around this very small community (population of 90 who mostly live on nearby properties) with its state of the art Muttaburrasaurus Interpretation Centre. The centre has a life size replica of a Muttaburrasaurus which was discovered by local grazier David Langdon in 1963 near Muttaburra, which turned out to be one of the most complete fossilised dinosaur skeletons uncovered in Australia.  Muttaburra is also the closest town to the geographical Centre of QLD and has very well thought out monument, as well as several interesting sculptures around town. We stopped at the local store and had some lunch then strolled back to the van for a quiet afternoon enjoying the serenity. We were the only ones parked at the freedom camp, until another Red Centre arrived in the afternoon. The campground is a great place to stay, no power, but plenty of space and potable water available - $8 per night. Much more appealing than the crowded caravan park and show grounds. We couldn't understand why more vans weren't here. Their loss.
