Day 96: Sat 30 Jul - Aramac

Day 96: Sat 30 Jul - Aramac

6 (Felt like 1) to 24 deg. Another fresh morning turned into a warm, clear sunny day. Strong wind in the morning settling later in the day, but for the first time in a long time - clouds appeared in the evening. We left the van at 8:30am to drive the 200km Lake Dunn Sculpture Trail loop comprising 67km of sealed and mostly single lane road to Lake Dunn, onto 65km dirt road along Balneety Road, then 77km along dirt road from Jericho to Aramac. The dirt road was corrugated in places, but mostly in reasonable condition. Stopping regularly to photograph the sculptures broke the monotony. The sculptures are all work of one person - Milynda Rogers who lived on a grazing property along the trail. It's one of the biggest, permanent, outdoor sculpture exhibitions in the world, with all pieces made from farm junk. Each piece takes her anywhere from a few hours to three months to make, depending on the size. The JT sculpture took about 10 months while the buttlerflies took a few days. The Lake Dunn Sculpture Trail is a definite must do, not just for the artwork but also for the landscape. We left at 8:30 and returned by 2:30pm, stopping for a packed coffee and mornos at Lake Dunn, and lunch along the Jericho Road. It was a fabulous day out, but very tiring - Noel drove, I navigated and photographed all but one sculpture (can you tell me which one i have left out?...I suggest we did it intentionally so that we will have something to come back and see on another visit). On return to the van, I had to unblock the non return water valve again, then I went for a bike ride around town, and out to the one sculpture that is not on the main trail - The Red Crayon out near the racecourse. Pre-dinner drinks were at Frank and Pam's van who arrived today (Red Centre Kimberley Plus owners who we met in Cooktown, and crossed paths again in Mareeba, Normanton and Julia Creek and now here at Aramac). Tomorrow morning we leave for Barcaldine for a two night stay.
